The older ones amongst us still remember when a visit to an ironmonger meant a counter in front of hundreds of drawers holding fastenings, brackets, locks, bolts, and everything imaginable to ‘build stuff’ – in our case building and installing fences. The ironmonger was an expert, knowing exactly what was needed to get the job done and what drawer it was in.
